Guide to Choosing a Rug for Your Home

At Consign & Design, we are known for our unique furniture consignment and our beautifully curated art consignment pieces — whether it’s a vintage framed photo, an acrylic on canvas piece, or even a rug!

Yes, that’s right; a rug can arguably be the most important art piece in a room. It can also be one of the most daunting art pieces to decide on for your home. A piece that takes up a large portion of space in a room and is intended to last for many years ought to be chosen carefully, but we’re here to help with the daunting part!

At Consign & Design in Palm Beach Gardens and Wellington, our associates are versed in the factors that make a consignment art piece the right fit for you, your family, and your home, and that includes rugs! Come visit us for personalized guidance in shopping our furniture consignment and art consignment store, or keep reading for our top tips!

There are a few factors to think about when choosing a rug before you consider the aesthetics of your consignment floor art. You’ll want to think about what rug construction, fiber, and care requirements are the right fit for your home.

The three main construction types are machine-made, hand-tufted, and hand-knotted. Each type has specific characteristics that are important to be aware of when deciding on a rug. For example, if you have kids or pets, you may not want to invest in a hand-tufted rug, but a machine-made rug would allow you the freedom of creativity in picking from a plethora of styles and allow for easy cleaning. In the same way, a less-trafficked room would be the perfect home for a hand-knotted rug to marry a sense of opulence with a handmade and treasured art piece.

Fibers will also be an important factor to consider when shopping for consignment rugs. Synthetic and natural fibers both have a place in the home, and their benefits can help determine what you should be looking for depending on which room you’re looking to finish. Synthetic fibers like polypropylene or viscose are cost-effective, durable, and stain-resistant. Natural fibers are typically used for handmade rugs. Some of our favorites are wool and jute. Wool is known for being soft, durable, and easy to keep clean, so it’s a classic for a reason. Jute is also a great staple for a timeless rug because of it’s neutral color and texture, but it’s not for those who are looking to make a statement with their rug.

As we touched on above, taking care of and cleaning your floor art piece will vary based on the rug’s construction and what it is made of. At Consign & Design, we recommend always starting to treat stains or messes with water and a linen cloth. A gentle cleanser can be used if necessary. However, the best cure for a future headache is anticipating your needs and realities. Consider the routine in your household (are kids coming in wet from the pool, do guests wear their shoes indoors, is the prospective room a quiet space, etc.) to help steer you in the right direction!

As always, we hope this guide to choosing the perfect consignment art piece — in the form of a rug — was helpful.
